U.S. Postal service regulations only allow the use of heavy stock for post card printing or is doesn't qualify for the postcard mailing rate. For durability and professional appearance, postcards need to be printed on 10pt or 14 pt cover stock. Printed postcards have an additional coating to protect them from damage during the automated sorting process. This coating can be glossy, matte, or flat.

Postcards are advertising and should stand the test of all other advertising media. They must be colorful and well designed in order to keep recipients' attention.
